Collection of fine particles in electrostatic precipitators : influence of EHD induced agitation and of particles disintegration
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper focuses on two particular phenomena which contribute to the poor collection efficiency of fine particles (from ~ 0.1 μm to ~ 2 μm) by electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). After considerations on the influence of turbulence which tends to decrease the collection rate, a conjecture is recalled on the action of the charged fine particles which is expected to give the main contribution in the generation of small eddies in ESPs. Results are presented of an experimental study of the collection efficiency η of cigarette smoke. The efficiency is found to decrease as the dust concentration is increased and the efficiency decrease is attributed to the increase in eddy diffusivity. The second phenomenon observed in the study is the disintegration of agglomerates in the ESP. A marked agglomeration process occurs because the smoke is kept in a big balloon during a few minutes; this agglomeration is more and more marked as the smoke concentration is raised. When charged in the ESP, some of the agglomerates disintegrate under the Coulomb repulsion, which increases the apparent collection efficiency η of the bigger particles (> ~ 0.6 μm) but clearly decreases η for the smaller ones (< ~0.5 μm).

Collection of Submicron Particles in Electrostatic Precipitators: Influence of Ehd Agitation and of Particles Disintegration
The paper focuses on two particular phenomena which contribute to the poor collection efficiency of fine particles (from ~ 0.1 μm to ~ 2 μm) by electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). Firstly, the influence of turbulence on collection rate is considered as well as the fact that the charged fine particles are expected to give the main contribution in the generation of small eddies in ESPs. متن کاملThe effect of wall strengtheners on the performance of double-stage electrostatic precipitators
The presence of wall strengtheners in double-stage electrostatic precipitators affects gas velocity, electrical field and particle movement over the ESP. In this work we have used our previous mathematical model for double-stage ESP {Talaie et. al (2001) [10]] to study the effect of wall strengtheners on the performance of double-stage ESP. One of the important findings was that, due to the fac...
متن کاملNovel Wet Electrostatic Precipitator for Sub - Micron Particles
The waste incineration plants, power generation utility, chemical industry, etc. require the efficient removal of submicrometer particles from raw gases. Wet electrostatic precipitators (WESP) are the most effective control device for fine aerosol from the humid raw gases. They use less energy than mechanical collection devices, have no moving parts to wear, their maintenance costs are lower, p...

The precipitation of particles in an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) results in striking dust patterns at the collecting electrodes, strongly depending on forces of the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) field in the duct. Due to precipitator geometry, electrical operation status, and process parameters, areas of high and low dust density are visible. Since latest results show a direct correlation of p...

Experimental data collected from different plate-type electrostatic precipitators used in a thermoelectric power plant has been analyzed. The following parameters were considered: the collection efficiency, average migration velocity of dust particles, velocity distribution of the gas in the input and output channels of precipitators. The average migration velocity of dust particles can be esti...
